Digital colour sensors are an 'industry first'

Avago Technologies is launching two miniature surface-mount technology (SMT) digital colour sensors for use in small consumer and portable electronic applications. Avago's ADJD-S311, which is claimed to be the smallest in the industry with dimensions of 2.2 x 2.2 x 0.76mm, is a CMOS IC with integrated RGB filters that targets designers of portable devices that require higher integration, smaller size and low power consumption. The ADJD-S371-QR999, measuring 3.9 x 4.5 x 1.8mm, is said to be the industry's first and smallest reflective digital colour sensing module that incorporates a white LED and digital colour sensor.

Digital colour sensors are an 'industry first'

Avago's ADJD-311 and ADJD-S371 digital colour sensors are four-channel red, green and blue (RGB) and clear digital colour sensors with 10-bit resolution that provide designers with easy integration, installation, and design flexibility - especially for designs where board space is constrained. Some of the target applications for Avago's miniature SMT series of RGB colour sensors include mobile and consumer products such as mobile phones, PDAs, MP3 players, handheld games, portable colour detection and measurement devices, and a wide range of other small consumer applications.

The small form-factor ADJD-S311 four-channel digital sensor comes in a chip scale package (CSP) that enables designers to accommodate more enhancements in the same amount of board space and can lead to further reductions in design and manufacturing costs. The ADJD-S371 is a reflective sensor module that incorporates the ADJD-S311 and a white chipLED soldered to the printed circuit board (PCB) with separator target applications that require reflective colour sensing.

Both the ADJD-S311 and ADJD-S371 digital colour sensors provide all the necessary circuitry to directly interface with a microprocessor using a conventional two-wire serial interface. Moreover, these sensors operate from a 2.5V supply voltage, providing significantly lower power consumption for portable devices.

Development kit

To make it easy for designers to evaluate and design-in these new miniature colour sensors, Avago also offers a complete 'plug and play' development kit that interfaces to a personal computer through a USB port. Avago's HDJD-JD07 development kit comes complete with all the tools and software customers need to quickly develop their colour sensing and measurement applications. Moreover, this development kit is suitable for use by designers who have little or no prior experience of using colour sensors for their applications.
