Digital tools to support engineering design

Nowadays in engineering, digital tools are an essential part of a design engineer’s daily life and any tools that are available freely are naturally an added bonus.

Schaeffler, as a manufacturer of bearings, has long been recognised as an industry leader when it comes to its engineering tools and technical knowhow. With its extensive knowledge across both the automotive and industrial sectors, Schaeffler has not only engineered technologically pioneering products but also market leading tools to support design engineers.

Fast, easy to use, and offering almost unlimited possibilities, Schaeffler offers these tools from a single platform under one simple dropdown. Enabling faster results for design, these tools include:

Linear configurators: Enabling the design of individual guideways and/or carriages or complete monorail guidance systems, coupled with the ability to export the CAD data, these offer an unrivalled advantage to engineers.

Bearing and housing selection assistants: Finding a suitable bearing and/or housing can be a complex undertaking. With many additional options to choose from these easy to use, step by step tools enable engineers to select the correct products for their application, using either the design envelope or the type of bearing/housings required. The variety offered by Schaeffler allows you to create precisely customised solutions.

BEARINX: Schaeffler’s powerful BEARINX programs offer a suite of calculation programs, from simple design and calculation modules available free of charge, to more complex online tools that are available to our customers. These programs are trans-parent, menu-driven systems allowing rapid, simple input of data for model generation, bearing selection and operating conditions.

For example, BEARINX-online Easy Friction allows for the detailed friction calculation of rolling bearings, whereas BEARINX-online Easy Linear and Easy Linearsystem allow for calculation of INA monorail guidance systems, or the calculation of the nominal life and static load safety of multi-axis positioning systems with driven INA linear actuators.

This showcases a fraction of what Schaeffler have to offer. Other tools available include bearing selection, interchange, bearing frequency calculator grease selection amongst others. Visit the platform and see for yourself how they can benefit your designs.

Tackling noise emissions from industrial machinery
Employers and dutyholders are required under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) to provide workers with equipment that meets relevant supply laws. They must also adhere to the Control of Noise at Work Regulations, and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) offers guidance which sets out an employer’s legal obligations. Paul Taylor, business development director for industrial services at TÜV SÜD, looks at the issue of machinery noise.
