BVM is extending its Mini-ITX and mini-board ranges of embedded boards by introducing products with Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 2 Feature Pack 2007 operating system (OS) installed. This componentised OS can be used on embedded systems that require subsets of Windows XP functionality and are required to be tamper-proof and/or have a small footprint.
Various OS options are offered, ranging from an off-the-shelf image on CompactFlash to a fully customised locked-down image for deeply embedded applications.
The standard Windows XP Embedded Advanced Set Top Box (ASTB) image includes the device drivers and services required for everyday applications, such as Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer, USB devices, and TCP/IP networking with file sharing. Also included are device drivers for display, serial and parallel ports providing a solid starting point for the development of most embedded applications.
The latest release, with Service Pack 2 and Feature Pack 2007, adds extensive control of the write filter, which is required on Flash-based systems to minimise wear of the Flash devices when configured as system discs.
Standard releases of Windows XP Embedded are available on CompactFlash or memory stick media for most of the Mini-ITX and mini-boards in the BVM range.
The OS can be customised by customers or by BVM. This service is available on request by customers completing a simple form specifying the device drivers they require their custom OS to support, and the services they require to be included. In this way it is possible for customers to lock-down their embedded systems, enabling only approved application programs and devices to be installed. For example, in 'public kiosk' embedded systems, it is essential that only approved applications are allowed to run, and that end-users are prevented from installing others.
