Emparro power supplies and MICO current monitors save space

Murrelektronik's Emparro power supplies and MICO current monitoring system have helped bdtronic to save considerable panel space when the company was developing its latest compact B5090 mixing and dispensing machine.

Bdtronic GmbH is located in Weikersheim in the south of Germany. The machine building company has many years of experience in process and automation. Bdtronic's machines and systems are used in many industries, for example automotive, electrical and electronics, filter, medical technology, aerospace, and food and beverage.

An important business area of bdtronic is developing and producing machines and process systems for dispensing reactive resins and material preparation. These modular systems can be adapted to users' specific requirements.

The B5090 fully automatic lean dispensing cell is an efficient system for processing components in batch production with liquid to paste-like reactive resins. A high level of automation ensures an application of consistent quality and high productivity. In the course of re-engineering, bdtronic's designers wanted to find a more compact design for the machine.

This was a challenge for the technicians from electrical engineering because, due to the machine's smaller dimension, the control cabinet also needed to be smaller. However, the identical technical components had to be housed in this limited space, meaning that every millimetre mattered.

The electronics engineers therefore decided to use Murrelektronik's Emparro power supply units. These supply the same power as the units used before. However, with a width of 85mm (the 20A unit) or 65mm (the 10A unit) they are clearly smaller. Due to their high efficiency (up to 95 per cent), Emparro power supplies generate only a very low heat loss, so only small safety distances are required.

Bdtronic uses the MICO Basic intelligent VDC current monitoring system to protect the cables. Four channels that used to be protected with individual circuit breakers are now monitored by a cabinet component only 35mm wide. And in the event of an overload they are safely switched off in a channel-specific way. Signal contacts that require extra space when circuit breakers are plugged together are already integrated in MICO Basic.

In the end there is a total saving in space on the cabinet's DIN rail of 85mm (total width is 185 instead of 270mm). That is why Murrelektronik's components made an important contribution in reducing the amount of space required. And there are other positive side effects: the integrated push-in terminals require considerably less wiring efforts; the Emparro's high efficiency reduces energy costs; and the MICO's integrated LEDs make sure that the current load of the individual paths can be checked at a glance. This last point helps engineers to take action early and avoid unplanned machine downtime.
