Explosion-proof motors safeguard hazardous area actuation

Exlar ER120 Series rotary explosion proof brushless servo motors and gearmotors provide an essential element as part of the vital safeguards necessary for operation in hazardous duty environments, which are constantly exposed to flammable gasses or vapours.

Explosion-proof motors safeguard hazardous area actuation

A surprisingly significant number of industries have an explosion risk, including those that rely on applications such as turbine fuel flow, printing presses, engine test stands, valve control, damper control, chemical process plant, fuel distribution and shipbound fuel management, paint booths and fuel skids.

Exlar's T-LAM technology employs an innovative segmented winding designed for efficiency, power and durability to provide high torque-to-size ratio. T-LAM yields a 35 per cent increase in continuous motor torque over traditional windings.

The gearmotor comprises a brushless permanent magnet motor optimised for use with an integral planetary gear set. Through the uniform load sharing of several gears acting in concert, planetary gear heads provide a compact, reliable setup providing high torque, low backlash and low maintenance.

In addition to the Exlar standard resolver, the ER120 is compatible with third party standard resolvers from Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Delta Tau, Advanced Motion Control, API Controls, Baldor, Baumueller, B&R Automation, Copley Controls, Elmo Motion Control, Infranor, Indramat/Bosch-Rexroth, Jetter Technologies, Kollmorgen/Danaher, Lenze/AC Tech, Schneider Modicon, Moog, Momentum, Metronix, Ormec, Parker, Pacific Scientific Standard Resolver, Siemens, SEW/Eurodrive, Whedco/Fanuc and Yaskawa.

ER Series motors are rated for Class I, Div 1, Groups B, C and D. "Class I" means that flammable gasses or vapours may be present in the air in quantities sufficient to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures. "Division 1" means that hazardous concentrations in the air may exist continuously, intermittently, or periodically under normal operating conditions.

"Group B" allows for atmospheres containing hydrogen, or gasses (or vapours) of equivalent hazard, such as manufactured gas. "Group C" allows for atmospheres containing ethyl-ether vapours, ethylene or cyclo propane. "Group D" allows for atmospheres containing gasoline, hexane, naphtha, benzene, butane, alcohol, acetone, benzol, lacquer solvent vapors or natural gas.

ER Series motors are not rated for operation in atmospheres containing acetylene. For further information about Exlar ER120 Series rotary explosion proof brushless servo motors and gearmotors, please go to www.olsenactuation.com.
