Flir launches smallest, lightest, most affordable thermal camera

Flir Systems is introducing its new i5, a pocket-sized infrared camera that sells for just 1990. Not only is the i5 easily affordable by the trades, but Flir Systems says it is also guaranteed to provide a rapid return on investment. It will give development engineers, electricians, plumbers, HVAC and plant engineers that all-important sixth sense, making them more efficient at their job. The i5 will add value to service and has the potential to boost profitability significantly. It even enables users to look at new applications - such as those aimed at minimising energy loss.

The i5 is claimed to be the first infrared camera of its kind on the market in terms of weight, size, functionality and price. Weighing less than 340g, it has an 80 x 80 pixel IR resolution and thermal sensitivity of 60mK that provides a clear infrared image so that faults can be identified and remedial action taken; a long-life battery provides up to five hours of continuous operation.

Temperatures up to +250degC can be measured with the i5 and it can detect thermal differences as small as 0.10degC; images are displayed on the camera's bright 2.8inch LCD. This measurement range enables the camera to meet the needs of a very wide range of mechanical, electrical and plumbing applications in domestic, commercial and industrial environments.

This multi-purpose camera is also said to be incredibly easy to use and requires no former experience. It really is a matter of point, shoot and detect hotspots. The resultant JPG images carry all the necessary temperature data and can be stored on a built-in SD card or downloaded directly onto a PC for analysis or email.

Available via a Europe-wide distribution network, the i5 comes with Flir QuickReport software for image analysis and easy creation of reports in PDF format. Also standard within the package are a 512MB mini SD card, Li-Ion rechargeable battery with adaptor/charger, USB cable and built-in lens shutter, hand strap, manual and user CD.
