Free 15-minute machinery safety sessions - and win an iPod!
Sick UK will be on stand D1328 at the Drives & Controls Show and the company says that 15 minutes spent there could provide engineers with a valuable insight into functional safety standards and machinery safety regulations (they could also win an iPod Touch!).
Sick will be holding regular 15-minute 'walk-throughs' of the new machinery safety standards BS EN 13849-1 & 2 for safety-related control systems and Sistema, the free software utility for modelling the structure of the safety-related control system components based on the designated architectures. Booking is advisable, although not essential, and those who preregister for sessions at 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 will be automatically entered into a daily draw to win an iPod Touch.
Sick will also showcase its Hiperface DSL motor feedback interface technology for encoders; the company says that Hiperface DSL offers machine builders an opportunity to achieve major savings in build costs and commissioning time. The protocol is designed to carry comprehensive servo data from the motor to the drive electronics with reduced cabling requirements. It has also been developed with safe drive systems in mind and incorporates the redundancy and error checking required to achieve SIL2 (PLd) and SIL3 (PLe).

In addition, Sick will be showing its first Ethernet-based fieldbus interfaces for the AFS60 and AFM60 freely programmable encoders (pictured), including Ethernet IP, EtherCAT and ProfiNET. The Ethernet IP encoders' Device Level Ring (DLR) technology for continuous monitoring and diagnostics provides a valuable opportunity to improve machine reliability and plant availability. The AFM60 multi-turn encoder also offers an innovative round loop capability for applications with continuous rotation.
Also revealed for the first time will be the DL100 Hi distance laser sensor for fast and reliable dynamic positioning. Benefiting from 20 years of Sick's laser technology know-how, the DL100 Hi offers improved accuracy and faster response times in a robust design. Its new modular platform capability offers the opportunity to integrate with new interfaces such as Ethernet.
As well as presenting at the 15-minute 'walk-through' sessions, Sick's Machinery Safety experts will be on hand to advise visitors on all aspects of machinery safety and regulations. They will also demonstrate important new networking, speed monitoring and software tools for Sick's flagship Flexi Soft Modular Safety Controller. The latest additions to Sick's comprehensive range of safety laser scanners, with an enhanced functional interface with the Flexi Soft controller, will also be on show.
