Free guide to surge and lightning protection

Phoenix Contact is offering a new 24-page guide to help installation technicians, design engineers and maintenance engineers understand the issues regarding surge and lightning protection.

Free guide to surge and lightning protection

Surge voltages originating from switching operations in electrical systems or from lightning strikes can readily damage or destroy electronic equipment. The new guide explains how to deal with the discharge currents of many thousand amps that can occur during the surge arresting process. Components such as air spark gaps, gas-filled surge arresters, varistors and suppressor diodes are used individually or in combined circuits to limit the output voltage, despite the high discharge current. The guide explains the specific characteristics and combinations that are used, and their application against the following criteria:

  • Surge arresting capacity
  • Operating behaviour
  • Extinguishing behaviour
  • Voltage limitation

The guide explains the principle of the 'protection circuit' and the fact that all conductors leading to a device requiring protection must, themselves, be protected. This applies for the areas of power supplies, MCR technology, information technology and transceiver systems.

Phoenix Contact's extensive and comprehensive Trabtech (transient absorption technology) product range is also explained. The Trabtech surge protection combination of high-quality protection devices and innovative arrester technology ensures a high degree of system availability and safety in all areas of electrical engineering.
