Free white paper discusses flow sensing for medical devices

Gems Sensors & Controls has published a white paper that examines how designers of medical devices and diagnostic instruments can keep pace with the demand for more complex, smaller, faster and reliable systems through better design of flow sensors. The paper, entitled Fluid handling in medical device design: issues and challenges, also discusses some of the solutions to the design problems, citing specific examples where equipment and system manufacturing improvements have been made to provide compact design and better control of production costs.

Fluids and gases play a vital role in most medical devices and diagnostic instruments used in hospitals and laboratories, and in some cases the measuring, monitoring or controlling of processes has life-critical implications. Components used in flow management are integral to the function of a diverse range of micro and macro applications ranging from sterilisation, dispensing, drug delivery in infusion pumps and gas delivery in ventilators to gas tank delivery or bulk waste disposal operations.

The white paper also presents the advantages available to OEMs by working in partnership with experienced fluidics specialists, and how this can shorten equipment development time considerably through streamlining measures that help reduce delays in production, lower component costs and the improve staff utilisation. Importantly, the paper also identifies some of the costly and time-consuming pitfalls that can besiege the design process through inadequate specification.
