Hall sensors are a long-life alternative to encoders

With a maximum switching frequency of 20kHz, they are up to five times faster than inductive sensors employed for similar applications. Thanks to two phase-shifted signals, Hall sensors are capable of detecting rotational direction or direction of travel, and are thus suitable for use as replacements for incremental encoders. And, in contrast to encoders, since they contain no ball bearings or other moving parts the sensors are subject to practically no wear, even at high rotational speeds. The units themselves are vibration- and shock-resistant. The front face of the M12 full metal jacket made of stainless steel offers protection to IP68. The operating temperature range is -40 to +120degC.

These new Hall sensors are designed for use in harsh industrial environments subject to extreme dust and oil contamination. Examples of such applications include textiles, tobacco and cement processing, as well as agricultural equipment. Keyways at either housing end allow them to be easily adjusted to the gearing being scanned.
