Harwin has won the prestigious Contribution to Sustainability award at the popular E-legacy awards organised by leading UK trade journal, Electronic Product Design (EPD). The annual event celebrates and rewards the innovation of electronics companies, focusing on the contribution that entrants make to preserve the environment and improve the communities where we live and work.
Harwin won the award in recognition of the company's investment in a new water treatment plant. Unlike many connector makers, Harwin is a vertically integrated manufacturing company keeping not only plating but all other essential manufacturing operations under one roof. This enables the company to be very innovative and responsive. Utilising previous technology and due to the company's strong growth, Harwin was using to 7000L of water per hour; the new facility means that the company now uses that same amount of water in two weeks.
The new resin filter technology plant, supplied by Puretech Environmental Ltd, cleans all the rinse water and recycles it back into the plating area. Heavy metals are reclaimed. Although this is a common practice for gold, Harwin claims it is an industry first to reclaim the tin using this process.
Steve Miller, Head of Internal Sales at Harwin comments: "This process also improves the water quality used in the plating line, which helps maintain a high quality of plating finish. Moreover, this new investment puts us ahead of immanent European legislation. We are delighted to receive this award and would like to take this opportunity to thank EPD and the readers who voted for us."
