HMI with sunlight-readable display suits offshore applications

The new DNV-approved EXTER T150-bl-sr 15inch touchscreen HMI from Beijer Electronics is a reliable, robust and easy-to-use unit that is equally at home on an offshore oil platform, in the engine room of a ship or on the bridge of a luxury yacht or pleasure cruiser.

Available in the UK from M.A.C Solutions, this new addition to Beijer's existing EXTER range of HMIs is the first of three black sun-readable models, with 10inch and 7inch touch screen versions being launched later in 2008.

Protection and appearance

The unit has an appealing black, powder-coated, aluminium frame and housing that provide protection to IP66, while also reducing reflected glare and adding an elegant, aesthetic feel to the HMI. As Thorogood points out: "Unpredictable maritime light conditions can often limit the effectiveness of other operator panels, but the EXTER sun-readable panel is actually easier to read in direct sunlight."

EXTER T150-bl-sr HMIs are suitable for round-the-clock nautical use. Thorogood states: "The EXTER T150-bl-sr features a clear, high-resolution, TFT display for optimal viewing and a 100 per cent dimmable backlight to ensure the best possible night-time vision, making it the perfect all-weather, 24-hour a day HMI."

The EXTER T150-bl-sr is tested and approved by the major nautical classification societies including DNV and Germanischer Lloyd. It also supports NMEA 0183 and is fully interoperable with all major automation brands.
