Inertial Aerosystems is launching a new low-cost microprocessor-controlled compass module. Designated the HMR3500, this high-performance device has a three-axis digital compass with a customisable co-ordinate system for mounting in any orientation.
Incorporating three anisotropic magneto-resistive sensors and three accelerometers, the device provides compass heading as well as pitch and roll angles.
Included are provisions for hard and soft iron correction algorithms to handle magnetic distortion effects. A world magnetic model feature is also provided to automatically add declination angle corrections for reference to true North.
This innovative product has less than 1 degree nominal heading accuracy with 0.1 degree resolution, with an update rate of up to 26Hz, +/-89degree pitch and roll with 360 degrees continuous roll capability. The operating temperature range is -40 to +85degC and the unit requires only 5V DC.
Suitable for use where space and weight are at a premium, the printed circuit version measures 39.88 x 50 x 13.21mm and weighs 17g. The device is also available as a development kit in an enclosed black aluminium case with cable assembly and software, weighing 85g.
This versatile product can be used for measuring tilt/movement of machinery, robotics, unmanned vehicles, vessels and buildings, as well as for applications in navigation, dead reckoning, personal and onboard navigation.
