How to install a safe shore power supply

Port authorities are looking into new ways to supply ships with shore power, as opposed to using their diesel-driven generators, in a bid to reduce CO2 emissions. An innovative modular cable feed system from igus is easily installed at defined mooring points; the system enables the safe supply of energy, thanks to an extendable energy chain and highly flexible chainflex cables - and is also available DNV GL certified.

How to install a safe shore power supply

The modular and compact system is fixed to mooring points in the harbour and has an extendable swing arm that bridges the distance to the ship. This allows the crew to easily connect the shore power to the vessel. The arm movement and the extension of the energy chain of 10m and more are carried out by an integrated electric drive system. This can be controlled via a control panel on land or alternatively with a remote control on-board. The three-dimensional triflex energy chain ensures safe tidal range compensation. The first three e-chain dispensers from igus have already been successfully installed near Bergen, Norway.
