IMI highlights fast-turnaround cylinder support for OEMs under lead-time pressure

IMI is reminding engineering OEMs to engage early when sourcing pneumatic cylinders for demanding applications, as tighter build schedules and growing needs for rapid turnaround continue to put pressure on traditional supply chains.

The challenge is becoming more acute as OEMs develop more productive machines, flexible designs and more efficient automation systems. Where non-standard specifications are required, or a failed component threatens uptime, traditional supply models are not always equipped to respond at the speed needed to keep projects moving.

To help OEMs address these challenges, IMI's network of Quick Response Cells (QRCs) can modify standard cylinders without full custom lead times, supporting projects that require fast turnaround, precise fit, and consistent quality.

Based in Alpen, Germany, and at University Park and Rockford in Illinois, QRCs have become the go-to resource for customers needing responsive pneumatic component manufacture. Customer requirements range from machine design adaptation and last-minute fit challenges to restoring critical uptime.

The QRC at Alpen delivers ISO 15552 special variants and custom specials in as little as one week. While the University Park and Rockford facilities build NFPA cylinders to order, with standard units available in as little as three days and configured bespoke products in five to 10 days.

At each location, IMI's Industrial Automation teams work directly with customers to define modifications such as piston rod changes, ports, footprint adjustments, seals, and surface treatments. While CAD-ready product data and controlled Bill of Materials (BOM) variants ensure consistency and precision, even at speed.

Sinneli Jayampathy, Actuator Product Manager, Industrial Automation EMEA for IMI said: "Speed is no longer simply an added value; it is expected, and it is integral to competitive advantage. We have structured our fast-turnaround offering to meet that need, with the capability to modify standard cylinders without full custom lead times. We continue to add new products to this capability, and we plan to expand the offering further through the integration of self-serve options."

Each cylinder is precisely configured to the required bore, stroke, mounting, and operating environment. This approach reduces operating pressure, minimises air consumption, maximises component life, and lowers the total cost of ownership. For OEMs, correct specification avoids oversizing which can lead to machine failure and downtime, improving efficiency across the machine build.

Sinneli Jayampathy added: "In pneumatic motion, reliability and speed reinforce each other rather than compete. Our QRCs are focused on delivering truly fit-for-purpose products, manufactured to the exacting ISO 9001 standard for every application."
