The Siemens Industry Automation Division is expanding Industrial Wireless LAN (IWLAN) with the iHOP function. This guarantees reliable communication even with interferences in the radio field. The access point, together with its clients, automatically hops to a different radio channel.
Despite careful planning of the radio field, interference may still occur when operating a WLAN, for example due to poor channel quality or individually active WLANs in the same frequency band of 2.4GHz. The IWLAN access point recognises this interference through continuous analysis with the iHOP function. The access point then decides whether it and its clients will leave the channel and change to a better channel. This hopping to a different channel takes place so rapidly that the application is not impaired by the change in frequency. If the interference occurs across the entire frequency band, it is even possible to change to the 5GHz band. The iHOP component is a functional expansion that uses a standard WLAN chipset.
