Infrared cameras benefit from improved sensitivity of 0.03degC

Flir has upgraded its P-Series infrared cameras to detect temperature differences as small as 0.03degC. The top-of-the-range Flir P660 and P640 plant maintenance cameras therefore benefit from a thermal sensitivity of 30mK, a rating that is more common among infrared cameras used for research and development. With their 640 x 480 uncooled detectors, these cameras already offer high performance, but the increase in sensitivity is claimed to take them into a class of their own.

As these proven and highly popular infrared cameras can now detect smaller anomalies in electro-mechanical systems, their value in preventing failure is now even greater. Even relatively minor problems can now be seen easily on thermal images that are exceptionally sharp. Furthermore, higher sensitivity means they can be used effectively at a greater distance from the target, which is an important safety factor for those inspecting high-voltage installations or moving machinery.
