Introducing MetaSphere's remote telemetry units

Following a management buyout from LogicaCMG, MetaSphere is promoting its comprehensive range of remote telemetry units (RTUs) for utility companies and organisations with geographically dispersed assets.

Introducing MetaSphere's remote telemetry units

Depending on the model selected, capabilities include: real-time monitoring of varying numbers and types of input; local IEC 61131-3 compliant automation; support for a wide range of communications from GSM/GPRS to satellite; standalone battery operation; and intrinsically safe operation in hazardous areas.

The units are designed around the company's Atomic Building Block concept, which defines a set of parameters that optimise the units for the applications they serve. These parameters include: the use of the same core building block, ensuring product synergy with additional components; an optimal match to the application I/O; and a compact size that makes the best possible use of application 'real estate'. Through this 'atomic' approach, user familiarity with one unit can be transferred to others in the range without the learning curve often associated with other products on the market.

Utilities and physical asset management organisations need to deliver ongoing cost savings and operate their asset base in a safe and reliable manner while, at the same time, reducing workforce levels and external costs. A key enabler for modern asset management is the effective use of telemetry data.

Experience and diverse product range

MetaSphere has extensive experience of integrating telemetry data with data from other systems; and its 'Smart Telemetry Solutions' provide a range of methods for employing telemetry data to improve business operations.

The range comprises:

  • MM-IM, a large works automation and data gateway
  • Compact MM3P, a general-purpose, small-footprint modular RTU
  • Battery MM3P, an IP68-rated GSM/GPRS-based low-power RTU
  • MM3PEx, an ATEX-compliant version of the Battery MM3P

Providing a wide range of interfaces and protocols to allow integration with any typical site equipment - from PLC to smart sensor - and to provide a single point for site supervisory control and data acquisition, the MM-IM offers full telemetry functionality, including alarm handling/reporting, current values and trending. Point values can be obtained from a wide range of open-standard I/O sources from the onboard serial and Ethernet ports.

The Compact MM3P is described as the ultimate RTU for applications such as small pumping stations where minimal I/O monitoring is required but size is an issue. A serial interface allows connection of all the common communications devices to provide wide area communications based around media such as PSTN, GSM, GPRS, UHF radio and satellite. The Compact MM3P is designed for those applications where a small footprint and full functionality are required.

The Battery MM3P was designed from the outset as a low-cost, fit-and-forget unit for use in harsh and hazardous environments in remote locations, and combines a data logger's compact form and simplicity of installation with the rich functionality of a high-performance RTU. The Battery MM3P derives all the power it needs (including sensor power, if required) from an inexpensive field-replaceable alkaline battery pack.

Finally, the MM3PEx ATEX-compliant low-power RTU is an intrinsically safe version of the popular Battery MM3P for use in hazardous areas where ATEX compliance (Zones 0 and 1) is required.

Thanks to its industry experience and technical knowledge, MetaSphere is able to offer RTU technology to address just about every application and environment. Ongoing and extensive investment in research and development will see other technologies coming to the market that will offer the same interoperability and configuration capabilities as the company's class leading RTU range.
