Knighthood for head of SKF Steel Technology Centre, Cambridge

Professor Harshad Kumar Dharamshi Bhadeshia FRS FREng has been appointed a Knight Bachelor for services to Science and Technology in the Queen's Birthday Honours. Professor Bhadeshia is the Tata Steel Professor of Metallurgy in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge, and also Director of the SKF Steel Technology Centre.

Knighthood for head of SKF Steel Technology Centre, Cambridge

His work is focused on transformation theory, which is concerned with the arrangement of atoms in a solid, in order to enable the invention of new iron alloys (steels). Research at the SKF UTC aims to: develop concepts and technologies to understand microstructure-property relationships relevant to bearing steels; conceive novel alloys, compositions and processing routes; and develop original physical and mathematical models to aid in the understanding of existing bearing steels and their properties, and in the invention of new ones. Ultimately, this research will lead to higher-performance bearings with longer life.
