Kontron ETX module has new AMD Embedded G-Series APU T16R

Kontron is introducing a low-energy and cost-effective version of its ETX 3.0 Computer-on-Module ETX-OH. The new ETX 3.0-compliant Kontron ETX-OH T16R incorporates the new AMD Embedded G-Series APU T16R, which features a very low average power consumption of only 2.3W. While operating at the same power consumption level as the AMD Geode-LX-based products, it delivers up to three times the level of performance.

The Kontron ETX-OH T16R, with its native PCI and ISA support, provides an upgrade path for AMD Geode-based ETX designs and for low-power systems with discontinued ETX modules. In addition, the new module extends the availability of the ETX standard for at least five more years. OEMs in markets such as Automation, Infotainment, Kiosk and Medical can significantly increase the processing and graphic performance of their systems and effectively extend the life of their PCI/ISA-based applications through to 2018.

The upgrade with the new Kontron ETX-OH is particularly economical in terms of time and cost savings. Existing system designs and cooling systems can continue to perform without modifications. The new Computer-on-Module also utilizes DDR3 memory, minimising memory costs, while enabling higher memory speeds and greater capacity. Also, for customers who want to update their applications with the latest display technology, the ETX module offers native support for DP++ (DisplayPort/HDMI/DVI) onboard. Thus OEMs can easily increase the visual experience of their applications without changes to the carrierboard.

For this, the new ETX 3.0 module offers significantly improved graphics performance and features via the integrated AMD Radeon HD 6250 - it supports 3D graphic libraries such as DirectX 11 and OpenGL 3.2 and delivers a brilliant and fluid reproduction of high-resolution BluRay and video streams of up to 1080p. In addition to the native DP++ on-board Kontron is offering an adapter for LVDS via DisplayPort. In combination with the native dual channel LVDS via the ETX connectors the module can control two digital displays in the highest image quality. This enables the upgrade of existing ETX applications with dual display technology with HD support.

The feature set in detail

The new Kontron ETX 3.0 Computer-on-Module ETX-OH T16R is based on the energy-efficient AMD Embedded G-series APU T16R (615MHz) and the Fusion Platform Controller Hub. It supports up to 4GB energy and cost-effective DDR3 RAM, which itself offers low latencies to memory-intensive applications. Those that have to integrate high-speed data storage media, such as Blu-ray players or very robust SSDs can take advantage of the two SATA connections with 6Gbit/s through high transfer rates and rapid loading processes.

An optional on-board SSD Flash enables space-saving integration of robust storage media. Further interfaces include 1× Fast Ethernet, USB 2.0, an optional micro-USB port on-board and HD Audio. High data security is enabled by the optional on-board Trusted Platform Module (TPM 1.2). Implementing ACPI 3.0 and the suspend modes S0/S3/S4/S5/S5 Eco, the new ETX 3.0 module offers high energy efficiency and minimises electrical power consumption at no-load operation.

The new Kontron ETX-OH T16R is available now and supports Windows 7 (32- and 64 bit), Windows XP, Windows Embedded Standard 7, Linux and VxWorks.
