Laidler publishes free Practical Guide to Machinery Safety
Laidler Associates has published a free Practical Guide to Machinery Safety. Running to over 50 pages, this full-colour A4 book contains a wealth of information for machine builders, system integrators and users of machinery and other work equipment. [Review by Jonathan Severn [email protected]]

Within the section Legislative background the book covers not only the Machinery Directive but also the EMC, Low Voltage (LVD), Pressure Equipment (PED), ATEX and Work Equipment Directives. There is also information about EN standards (Euronorms, or harmonised standards), and a note about machinery for maritime applications.
An entire section in the guide is devoted to Risk assessment and hazard analysis. This addresses the issues to consider and the relevant standards (EN ISO 14121-1, EN 954-1, EN ISO 13849-1 and EN/IEC 62061). There is also a very useful table that will help readers decide whether to apply EN ISO 13849-1 or EN/IEC 62061.
Section 4 covers The Four Steps to CE Marking for the Machinery Directive. As well as tackling the essential health and safety requirements (EHSRs), technical file, declarations and CE marking, this section also introduces the new Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, which comes into force on 29 December 2009, and highlights a few of the important changes.
Within Section 5, EMC solutions, the guide states "Design and assembly of machinery to meet the requirements of the EMC Directive is not an exact science." Nevertheless, the guide presents some basic principles that can be applied and some of the tests that will help to demonstrate compliance.
