Linear potentiometer position transducers sealed to P65 or IP67
Variohm-EuroSensor has been manufacturing its own VLP and ELP linear potentiometer position transducers within the Variohm Holdings Group for several years and has recently introduced new dual-lip sealing to enhance reliability and operating life in harsh environments.
This well proven sensor range, available in stroke lengths from 12.5mm to 300mm in 25mm increments, or in custom lengths on request, is offered in a choice of 15mm (VLP) or 9.5mm (ELP) diameter cylindrical housings. With self-aligning spherical bearing mounts and optional quick-release mechanisms to protect against damage caused by overtravel, the range provides up to +/-0.05 per cent independent linearity and positioning repeatability to 0.01mm. According to Variohm-EuroSensor, the latest ELPM models are being used on many of the Formula 1 cars racing in 2012.
Improved O-ring and felt shaft sealing provides a choice of IP65 or IP67 protection in a compact design that is claimed to keep the overall sensor length shorter than competitive devices from other manufacturers.
Patented wiper
Central to the performance, operational life and reliability of the VLP and ELP series is the Novotechnik patented wiper system that offers protection in applications involving high vibration. This sensing technology combines a conductive plastic resistance element built up using several layers of specialised printed inks with multi-fingered precious metal wipers in an elastomer-damped mechanism that maintains complete, smooth and uninterrupted contact with very low electrical noise, even under the most arduous physical and environmental conditions. A hard-coated finish helps to enhance reliability, particularly in applications where dither might otherwise cause premature failures.
These sensors are well proven in autosport applications where shock and vibration conditions far exceed those normally seen in industry. High-temperature versions are also available for use at up to +150degC continuous, with short-term ratings to +175degC. Life expectancy across the range is better than 25 million cycles.
