On its own, the Universal Robot from R.A. Rodriguez is one of the most economical and versatile pieces of automation currently available on the market, but now its scope of application is even greater; working in conjunction with vision specialists at Image House, R. A. Rodriguez is now supplying a six-axis robot with vision as an intelligent, automatic pick-and-place and quality assurance system.
R.A. Rodriguez is offering the Universal Robot with vision as a standard, off-the-shelf package with all the elements needed for the application: robotic arm, appropriate gripper, smart cameras and software. The cameras are manufactured by Cognex, a leading brand in the industrial automation market and a company with which Image House has a long and successful association.
If the vision robot is for simple pick-and-place tasks, the standard Cognex camera system is recommended. However, for those applications where capturing image detail is important - such as bar code reading - a high-resolution alternative Cognex camera is also available. URIS software developed by Image House allows the Universal Robot to be integrated easily with either of these cameras.
Depending on the application requirements, one camera can be used, for example, to locate a component to be picked from a random position on a conveyor, or two cameras can be used to scan two different or adjacent areas. Alternatively, one camera can be used for the pick operation while another to identify where the component is to be placed.
Image House has been able to take full advantage of the user-friendly interfaces that are common to both the Universal Robot and Cognex vision system. The result is a fully integrated vision robot that is as easy to use as its respective components. In the same way as a basic Universal Robot, the vision-equipped robot can be up and running within a matter of hours. This means it is feasible to use the robot for many different tasks, with no need for a "robotics expert' to set up the system.
