Low-cost Tx/Rx family of optical transmitter/receiver devices

OMC is launching their H19 range of low-cost optical transmitter/receiver devices for polymer and large-core glass fibre systems, featuring a precision-machined metal ferrule which provides enhanced reliability for industrial applications. The range includes both single channel devices for use with simplex fibre and dual channel devices with duplex connectors facilitating transceiver operation.

Most connector systems for use with polymer fibre are produced almost entirely out of plastic, including the ferrule that attaches to the fibre. This provides a lower-cost option over metal connector systems, but can lead to reduced robustness and resilience when used in long-term industrial applications or other demanding environments.

OMC's H19 package benefits from the cost advantages of a high-quality plastic housing, but the design incorporates a precision-machined metal ferrule which provides a much higher level of precision and ruggedness over plastic-ferruled systems. The connector body also features twin metal side plates which allow a four-point mechanical solder connection to the circuit board. This provides a much stronger and more secure mechanical connection than typically found in plastic-bodied parts and further enhances the device's reliability in industrial applications, both through added vibration resistance and by minimising mechanical strain to the electrical solder joints. The H19 is designed predominantly for use with polymer fibre systems but can also be used with large-core glass fibre should extended range be required. Any of OMC's transmitter or receiver diodes can be housed in the H19 package, providing considerable versatility to designers.

OMC's Commercial Director, William Heath, comments: "The H19 series is designed to provide the optimal solution in applications that combine the contrasting requirements of low cost and high reliability and robustness. Engineers can choose the transmitter and receiver devices that suit their system design, or we can calculate the optical budget for their system and suggest the appropriate parts. Using our proprietary Active Alignment technology we can also produce the devices to specific electro-optical performance windows as required by each customer's application."

OMC offers a wide range of transmitter/receiver parts as standard products, and can house diodes in a variety of housings and connector systems to provide the most appropriate option for each application. The company also specialises in re-engineering obsolete transmitter, receiver and connectors to support legacy systems requiring maintenance or refurbishment.
