Telemecanique is launching a new mid-range yet powerful programmable controller that is both compact and rugged. Called the Modicon M340, it is configured using Schneider Electric's Unity Pro software. It also complements the established Modicon Premium and Quantum Unity automation controller families, providing a complete control family for machine manufacturers, system integrators and end users alike.
With an enviable pedigree, the Modicon M340 can trace its roots back to the very first programmable logic controller (PLC) introduced by Modicon over 35 years ago. Like its predecessors, the new Modicon M340 continues the tradition of introducing innovative automation technology.
Offering high performance, multi-tasked processing and support for all five of the IEC 61131-3 programming languages, the Modicon M340 is capable of handling demanding applications. The processor incorporates up to 4MB of internal memory, an SD card slot, a USB port and two additional communication ports (Ethernet, CANopen or Modbus). The Modicon M340 also benefits from the Schneider Electric's vast experience in counting, positioning and regulation.
The incorporation of the SD Card enables data to be automatically backed up to an internal Flash memory and the application within the SD Card. No battery is required, reducing a maintenance consideration. The 'Plug and Load' technology means applications can easily be updated and, for machine manufacturers, multiple machines can be simply and consistently setup. Data files for recipes, traceability or maintenance can be stored and subsequently accessed from a PC or by simple 'drag and drop' via FTP. Applications are maintained via the Modicon M340's USB port or over Ethernet. Machines can be accessed from anywhere with complete security via modem or high speed DSL links. Depending on the technology chosen, programming can be performed online, programs transferred, data files accessed and, thanks to the embedded web server, managed remotely via a web browser for operation and diagnostics.
With its compact dimensions, the Modicon M340 requires little panel space, and it is flexible, too, accepting from four to 12 modules in a rack with up to 64 discrete I/O per module. I/O modules can be hot-swapped and are automatically reconfigured by the CPU should they need replacement.
The Modicon M340 is rugged and withstands severe industrial environments as well as meeting, and in most instances exceeding, the limits imposed by the relevant IEC standards.
