Motovario launches Drivon: fully integrated inverter motors

Motovario S.p.A is launching Drivon, a new generation of inverter motors for today's most advanced motion applications, at SPS IPS DRIVES 2014 in Nuremberg.

Motovario launches Drivon: fully integrated inverter motors

Drivon features state-of-the-art field-oriented control for optimum motor performances, combined with important safety and protection including Safe Torque Off (STO) and flying motor restart built-in to help minimise engineering overheads and simplify product approval testing.

With a typical speed range of 0-3000rpm this new family delivers advanced high-efficiency motion for applications such as, conveyors, palletisers, pumps, fans, mixers, rotary tables, presses, winders, unwinders and elevators (no zero-speed).

Drivon inverter motors are also available mounted and integrated with gear reducers to satisfy special requirements. Motovario's advanced vector-control algorithms ensure constant torque over a wide frequency range, minimise reliance on cooling at low speeds, and enhance the motor's tolerance of over-torque conditions.

Fabio Morara, Business Development Manager at Motovario comments: "Drivon brings together state-of-the-art control and safety features to create an advanced solution that simplifies system integration while delivering high performance and energy efficiency. This extension to our product range significantly increases our presence in leading global markets for advanced automation and intelligent motion."

The integrated STO with dedicated input provides safe motor stop and prevention of unintentional restart in accordance with functional safety standards such as EN954-1 category 3 and IEC 61508 SIL2. By providing STO already built-in, Drivon relieves system integrators of responsibility for implementing mandatory basic safeguards thereby reducing engineering time and bill of materials costs.

Dynamic braking with energy recovery

Flying motor restart, also built into all Drivon inverter motors, allows end users to turn off and restart the motor quickly if needed without waiting for the rotor to stop. Drivon automatically calculates the correct voltage and frequency for the prevailing rotor speed to protect the controller circuitry and ensure long-term reliability. In addition, optional dynamic braking with energy recovery ensures fast response to changing speed demands and minimises operating costs.

Featured for fast and efficient integration within an existing factory network, Drivon supports multiple networking and connectivity standards including Modbus RTU and CANopen DSP 4.0.2. An optional Profibus DPV1 communication module is also available. In addition, a smart keypad simplifies user setup by providing intuitive up, down, enter, mode and movement-direction controls, as well as a parameter-copy function for rapid setup of multiple motors. The keypad integrates a speed-control potentiometer and has a built-in jog function to move the motor in steps. Each Drivon also has a USB port which allows configuration and monitoring using PC-based software. The software provides easy-to-use setup tools and an oscilloscope function for monitoring reference values.

Drivon inverter motors are initially available in power ratings from 0.25 to 1.5kW for operation from single-phase or three-phase 230V supply and from 0.25 to 5.5kW for 400V three-phase operation. Selection software published online helps system integrators identify the optimum Drivon inverter motor for their application. All units are certified according to global product-qualification schemes including CE, UL and CSA.
