New mobile app from SKF simplifies bearing mounting

SKF has developed a new mobile app that it says "Simplifies the task of mounting and replacing bearings". The SKF Bearing Assist app, developed together with customers, provides detailed mounting instructions for a comprehensive range of SKF bearings. The app has been configured for use by engineering and maintenance teams and is designed to minimise the problems of incorrect mounting, thus helping to reduce installation time and cost. It also assists in extending the operating life of bearings.

Bearing Assist also allows users to keep a record of the work they have carried out, which can be readily shared to improve the way that bearing knowledge is available across an organisation. Linus Wahlterius, Product Manager at SKF says: "SKF Bearing Assist is a new mobile tool that enables quick, correct and easy mounting. It's a tool that can turn new recruits into experts".

The app contains detailed product information, including bearing designation, bearing type (with visuals) and suffix descriptions, as well as dimensions and illustrations. The mounting instructions cover bearings with basic design that are included in the standard assortment. Information such as clearance reduction and drive-up method calculations, and recommendations on lubrication, can save time and effort when fitting bearings.

Once a bearing has been mounted, this can be recorded in the app with details such as date, specific asset, location and work order. Details of which specific bearing has been mounted can also be added. Results can instantly be exported as a PDF, reducing the time needed to produce a mounting report. Logging these details in such an efficient way, says SKF, helps to improve maintenance collaboration which in turn can assist with maintenance planning and ultimately increase asset reliability.

Bearing Assist is available for free download from Apple Store in the UK from June 9th and will soon be available in other countries and on Google Play. A quick in-app registration for full functionality (including storing and sharing records) is required. Users with relevant existing SKF accounts will find the log-in details are the same as for the company's ProCollect service and other applications. Go to www.skf.co.uk for more information.
