Pilz is launching the PITmode fusion, a modular operating mode selection and access permission system. Being modular, the system offers machine builders and system integrators greater flexibility when implementing safety and security on equipment and processes.
The new PITmode fusion consists of the PITreader reader unit with RFID technology and integrated web server, and an SEU (Safe Evaluation Unit). Its modular design enables the PITmode fusion to be integrated individually into the design of existing control consoles. Existing pushbuttons can be used, enabling better operation for the user. PITmode devices are used on plant and machinery in which users switch between different control sequences and operating modes.
Authorised users have a coded RFID transponder key that provides them with the necessary access rights for performing the tasks that are required of them. Up to five safe operating modes can be defined, such as automatic mode, manual intervention under restricted conditions, or service mode. The key is inserted into the control console, the SEU detects the specified operating mode, and the PITreader ensures functionally safe switching. Accidents, misuse and manipulation are therefore prevented. Users benefit from higher availability of their machines.
The RFID keys are read and taught in the PITreader. To increase protection against manipulation, they can be coded with company-specific programmed PITreaders; the keys include a password-protected signature. Any keys that do not have company-specific coding will be denied access. In addition, RFID keys and the PITreader can be used to implement a group-based permission management. In this case the various enables are transferred to whole groups with the same access permissions instead of individual persons. This simplifies the assignment and administration of access permissions, particularly with companies in several locations, including internationally. The administrative effort is reduced and time saved.
Pilz says the PITmode fusion can be used to implement a wide range of functions beyond access permission and operation mode selection. It may be a simple enable that replaces a key switch at the control console, or access permission for machine subfunctions. On top of that, a complex hierarchical permission matrix with various groups and permissions can be created in the free user area. These functions are bundled on the RFID key, replacing additional mechanical keys or access cards. This makes management of the access privileges much easier.
Two other versions of the PITmode are available in addition to the modular version. The PITmode is a compact all-in-one device that includes the pushbuttons for operating mode selection and the SEU, which enables a space-saving installation. The PITreader reader unit can be used to control access permissions, and is particularly versatile as a standalone device or in conjunction with a Pilz controller such as the PNOZmulti configurable small controller or the PSS 4000 automation system. Both the PITmode and PITmode fusion offer functionally safe operating mode selection and access permission up to PL d.
