New orientation, singulation and product separation system

UPM is showing a number of innovative conveyor systems at this year's Processing and Packaging Machinery Association (PPMA) exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham from 30 September to 2 October 2014. Chief among these will be a new orientation, singulation and product handling separation system. The company will also demonstrate a number of stainless steel and high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE) conveyors. The UPM systems on show will include gravity rollers and accumulation tables that also display features such as static elimination and product cooling.

New orientation, singulation and product separation system

The period 2014/2015 looks set to be a record sales year for the company, which was founded just over 35 years ago. UPM Sales Director Roy Fowler says: "We exhibit and promote ourselves in many different areas but the PPMA is our 'home' trade body and we therefore find the PPMA exhibition particularly fruitful; especially in the sales areas of food processing and packaging. INTERPLAS 2014, of course, is just next door and so we are also looking forward to welcoming friends old and new from our extensive track record in all kinds of plastics manufacturing. All in all, we are expecting to do good business at a busy venue."

UPM's year has also been boosted with over 50,000 of recent investment in mechanical solid modeling design software. The new CAD systems allow fast and easy digital prototyping of customer systems. Images can be rotated through 360 degrees, thus streamlining and enhancing the company's 100 per cent client-bespoke manufacturing capabilities.

Made-to-measure conveying and product handling

Fowler notes: "Our new design competences give each and every UPM client a perfect fit in terms of made-to-measure conveying and product handling. Interfaces with existing client equipment can be designed-in from the outset in 3D space; precise footprints can be exactly planned-in. The new software also includes assembly stress analysis. This allows us to model and test the driving loads, friction characteristics, dynamic components and speeds on any new system - before we build it."

And once PPMA and INTERPLAS 2014 are out of the way, UPM heads to London where, together with client Plastek UK, the company has been shortlisted for a Plastics Industry Award. The ceremony takes place on Friday 24 October 2014 at the London Hilton Hotel, Park Lane.

Plastek UK and UPM Conveyors have been working on automation of the former's product handling. UPM Conveyors installed the first system for Plastek UK in 2005 and has now completed their third additional system. Complete versatility of operation is provided via an HMI touch screen control whereby all products from Plastek's injection moulding machines can be transferred to the fully automatic assembly and packaging machines without any manual involvement.
