New triax MEMS high-g shock accelerometer from PCB Piezotronics

PCB Piezotronics is launching a new state-of-the-art triax MEMS shock accelerometer capable of measuring up to 60,000g. Designed for shock testing, the new PCB series 3503A1060KG features three single-crystal silicon MEMS sensing elements and represents the state-of-the-art industry technology for miniature, high-amplitude, DC response acceleration sensors. The device is capable of measuring long duration transient motion as well as responding to and surviving very fast rise times typically found in high-g shock events.

The air-damped acceleration sensing element, micromachined from silicon, is manufactured using advances in etching techniques and equipment. The tiny element measures just 2.5 × 1.7 × 0.9mm and incorporates a seismic mass, protective over-range stops and a full active piezoresistive Wheatstone bridge.

Packaged in a titanium housing with integral cable, the new model 3503 features wide band frequency response, no zero-shift, low transverse sensitivity, ESD protection and excellent amplitude linearity. Mechanical over-range stops ensure durability while damping of 2 per cent reduces resonance amplification. OEM packaging configurations are also available.

Low power consumption and short warm-up time make the model 3503 suitable for a broad range of shock applications including consumer electronics drop testing, pile drivers (e.g. piles for a pier driven into the ocean), down-hole oil exploration, jack hammer manufacturers, sporting goods manufacturers, penetrator tests, weapons data recorders, launch characteristics and blast loading of structures among many others.

PCB Piezotronics new model 3503 is designed to fulfil the most demanding aerospace, industrial and commercial application requirements. The product's design concepts are the result of more than 20 years of PCB expertise in very high-g shock (20,000g) measurement applications and sensor development.

Priced competitively, the new model 3503 triax MEMS high-g shock accelerometer is designed for use with PCB Piezotronics' model 482C27 signal conditioner or any suitable bridge conditioner. The new device is also not ITAR controlled, making it suitable for use in global applications. For more information go to www.pcbsensors.co.uk.
