Norelem offers expanded range of universal joints in stainless-steel

Norelem has expanded its range of universal joints to include double stainless-steel joints, meeting the needs of applications where high corrosion resistance is required.

Universal joints are designed to connect rigid shafts whose axes are inclined to each other and are commonly used in shafts that transmit rotary motion, whilst compensating for axle misalignments. Both single and double joints are mounted on plain bearings, which means that the joints can compensate for significantly larger angular misalignments compared to other types of couplings. Additionally, universal joints double also compensate for radial misalignment.

Whilst the joints can withstand high rotation speeds, the maximum speed depends heavily on the working angle and load, but as a rule, should not exceed 500 rotations a minute. Additionally, there are limits to the working angles, which is 45° for universal joints single and 90° for universal joints double.

“The new additions to our library of universal joints allow us to provide new components to a multitude of new industries,” explains Marcus Schneck, CEO of norelem. “The high chromium content of the stainless-steel material means that the joints are suitable for use in situations where high corrosion resistance is required, such as in outdoor applications or use in the chemical, food, or pharmaceutical industries.”

The joints are available with and without a keyway, which, in conjunction with a keyed joint, ensure that the couplings transmit the load, power and rotation without slipping and within the accuracy requirement of the design. For example, a keyway should be selected if an anti-rotation device is required. However, as these connections are not suitable for all loads and all connections, such as alternating directional loads and shocks, they are available as a variation and not as standard. Additionally, if the joints are being continuously operated, they will require sufficient lubrication and if necessary, a rubber protective sleeve filled with grease.

The universal joints are mounted with almost no play, meaning that they are extremely sustainable in the transmission of loads. Additionally, due to the high corrosion resistance of the stainless-steel, the universal joints are particularly suitable for outdoor applications or use in the chemical, food, or pharmaceutical industries, where product safety and quality is of the upmost importance.
