Power supplies save energy through regenerative braking

Two new regenerative power supply modules from Lenze take energy that would otherwise be wasted when a machine slows or stops and feeds it back into the mains, thereby reducing overall energy consumption and reducing costs. The new modules, which suit the 9400 servo drive range, achieves a high degree of efficiency during both power supply and regenerative feedback. Applications can benefit from the modules even where the regenerative power is relatively low.

The RPS regenerative power supply modules are available with two power ratings. A smaller model delivers 15kW of power and is able to feed 7.5kW back into the mains, while a larger version supplies 27kW with 13.5kW available for power recovery. They are suitable for use where either continuous (for example, on dereelers/unwinders) or cyclic braking energy is produced. Examples of cyclic braking include hoists and positioning drives. Instead of converting the energy to wasted heat via brake resistors or friction brakes, this energy can be easily recovered. As a result, energy efficiency is increased while running costs and CO2 emissions are reduced.

Lenze's new RPS modules belong to the company's L-force drive and automation platform. They are designed for easy integration with the Lenze 9400 servo drives because, as modern servo drives machinery runs faster and faster, the amount of kinetic energy that can be saved is greater. These savings can greatly influence the running and life cycle costs of a machine.
