PoweredUSB cables suit power-hungry peripherals

GTK is launching a series of PoweredUSB cable assemblies designed for both power and signal applications. PoweredUSB connection systems provide a single-cable connection that supplies both the standard USB communication signals and two additional wire pairs for extra power.

One of the limitations of standard USB is the amount of +5V current available to supply attached peripherals. This is sufficient for mice and keyboards, but not for peripherals requiring more than 500mA. PoweredUSB assemblies simplify computer system wiring and reduce system cost as no separate power brick is required for power-hungry peripherals, thereby reducing the requirement for power outlets.

GTK's PoweredUSB cable assemblies are available in three voltage selections, namely 5, 12 and 24V, all with a latching mechanism to give a secure connection in all environments. Assemblies are produced to suit customers' requirements in terms of length, termination on the other end, etc.

Powered USB connection systems enable hot-plugging, which, in combination with plug-and-play operating systems, means that systems in busy applications can be easily maintained and supported. Connectors are also keyed to match the voltage type and colour-coded to simplify voltage identification +5V (ivory), +12V (teal) and +24V (red).

Applications for the new PoweredUSB series include OEM POS equipment in the retail sector.
