Precision control for magnetic particle clutches and brakes

MAGPOWR magnetic particle clutches and brakes, available exclusively in the UK from Motion Drives and Controls Limited, are a very precise yet simple way to control web tension and torque. For even greater control at near-zero torque, all MAGPOWR power supplies include a reverse current feature that helps to remove the inherent drag torque caused by small amounts of residual magnetism within the mechanism. This standard feature ensures the widest possible torque range and is proven to maximise finished quality and decrease material wastage in web tensioning applications, particularly for nonwoven and delicate materials.

MAGPOWR clutch and brake units cover input speeds between 34rpm to over 3000rpm with torque ratings from 1 to 135Nm. Applications range from simple open-loop unwind to fully integrated closed-loop tension control systems with clutches and brakes available in a variety of mounting configurations. Cooling options to improve torque transmission, braking capacity and duty cycle are available.

Tension controls include the compact Cygnus, providing a range of advanced features including web break detection and out-of-round roll compensation. The comprehensive Versatec tension controller includes modes for ultrasonic tension control, dancer control, free loop, and ranger applications. Other dedicated controllers are available for dancer/follower applications and the complete range is supported with load cells and readouts.

A full range of matching power supplies includes the DIN-rail-mounted PS-90. With a current regulated voltage range of -3.6V DC to +90V DC and four selectable current ranges of 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, and 1A, the unit may be mounted inside the machine cabinet and manually adjusted by an operator from a remote potentiometer or can be controlled by a 0-10V DC input from a MAGPOWR controller or PLC. For very convenient installations, this CE-marked, UL- and cUL-listed product may be fitted inside the Cygnus-E tension controller. A 24V DC version (PS-24) is also available.

Other power supply options include card and packaged versions. All MAGPOWR power supplies include the reverse current feature to deliver excellent fine control for web tensioning and precise torque-limiting applications.

Motion Drives and Controls limited provides a complete service covering the supply of components through to customised design and on-site installation of turnkey automation systems with a 24-hour, 7-day service backup.
