Safebook 4 - machinery safety guidance from Rockwell Automation
Rockwell Automation has published Safebook 4 - Principles of Machine Safety: Legislation, Theory and Practice, which is an updated version of its popular Safebook series. It now incorporates more information on two functional safety standards - EN ISO 13849-1 and EN 62061 (IEC 62061) - that can be referenced instead of EN 954-1, the old machinery safety standard that will cease to provide a presumption of conformity to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC at the end of 2011. In addition, Safebook 4 includes application examples with Performance Level calculations, guidance on the principles of machine safety, a list of relevant standards, and it describes methods of implementing safety-related control systems on machinery.
Running to 150 A5 pages, Safebook 4 covers the following topics:
- International and regional regulations
- Relevant standards for machinery safety
- Safety strategy
- Risk assessment
- Protective measures and complimentary equipment
- Safety distance calculations
- Prevention of unexpected power-up
- Structure of safety-related control systems

Rockwell Automation is making a major effort to help machine builders and system integrators comply with the requirements of the new Machinery Directive and to help them migrate from EN 954-1 to the functional safety standards EN ISO 13849-1 and EN (IEC) 62061. As well as Safebook 4, the company is also offering White Papers, videos, technical publications, and machine-level software and Sistema-compatible library files. Rockwell Automation says it aims be the 'one-stop choice for all things relating to machine safety' - plus the company has a number of trained and accredited safety engineers who can provide detailed technical assistance to customers, without charging for these valuable consultancy and engineering services.
