TR Controls Ltd, the UK representative for TR Electronic, is launching the CD_75 safety encoder that incorporates optical and magnetic technologies and microprocessors within a single housing to provide dual redundancy and cross-monitoring so the device can be certified to SIL3 (Safety Integrity Level 3 of IEC 60501 and EN 62061) and PLe (Performance Level e of EN ISO 13849-1). Safe outputs are provided as Profisafe or dual SSI with checksum, depending on the model.
The absolute encoder features 13 bit resolution and 8192 steps per revolution for 32,768 revolutions (4096 revolutions for the dual SSI output models), sin/cos signals or incremental signals for positional feedback. For safety reasons, the resolutions of the master and safety functions are not programmable.
In terms of communications, the CD_75 safety rotary encoder is available with SSI, dual redundant SSI, ISI and parallel direct outputs, plus Profibus, Profisafe, CANopen, DeviceNet and LWL fieldbus protocols. In addition, customers can specify EtherCAT and ASI.
The 75mm encoder features a 10mm solid shaft or 20mm bore hollow shaft and is sealed to IP54, though there is an option of a factory-fitted seal kit to increase protection to IP65. The operating temperature range is 0 to 60degC (or -20 to 70degC on request) and the maximum relative humidity is 98 per cent, non-condensing. Maximum speed is 6000rpm.
Typical applications for the CD_75 safety encoder include cranes, hoists, positioning systems, automated machinery and wind turbines. As well as being suitable for monitoring positions, the encoder can be used in conjunction with suitable control devices to monitor standstill, speed and direction. If required, a secondary encoder can be used at the other end of the shaft to monitor for failures such as shaft breakage.
