Simatic ET200pro FC drive incorporates safety functions

Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) is introducing the Simatic ET200pro FC that performs safety functions as well as being capable of energy regeneration. Profibus is available as the communication interface.

Due to the modular design of the ET200 pro I/O system, the converter can be replaced without any interruption of communication with the ET200pro station. Like all other modules of the ET 200 series, it has diverse user-friendly Step7 mechanisms for diagnostics. The converter can be operated via the corresponding interface module and, when this is done, does not appear as its own bus node. This simplifies communication due to the lower number of bus nodes. Moreover, operation is less susceptible to problems, and the effort involved in installation is reduced.

The safety functions integrated in the Simatic ET200pro FC provide encoderless protection for human beings and machines. Due to integration of the safety functions STO (safely switched-off torque), SS1 (safe stop1) and SLS (safely limited speed), less mounting space is required, and there is less wiring and fewer additional components.

Siemens' Simatic ET 200pro FC also has a new power infeed concept that needs around two per cent less input current than a comparable frequency converter. This reduces the reactive power, lowers the power costs and makes it possible to design an installation for lower power outputs. The use of a line commutating reactor, brake chopper and brake resistor is no longer necessary either. At the same time, the converter returns the energy to the power supply system during braking, causing considerably less line harmonic distortion than standard frequency converters. There are no additional heat losses, so considerable savings can be made in respect of the costs for wiring, space and engineering.
