Available with nominal diameters from 50-125mm, the latest high load capacity ball screws from SKF are dependable and cost-effective for a wide range of linear motion applications. In many cases, they can be used as a superior alternative to hydraulic actuators, eliminating the need for expensive, inconvenient and environmentally unfriendly hydraulic power packs.
For low-load applications, SKF offers type SD and BD miniature ball screws that can be supplied in diameters ranging from 8-16mm. With leads from 2-5mm, these have static load ratings from 2.5-10.5kN. All types feature a cylindrical nut with a threaded end to ensure easy mounting, and all combine smooth running and good back-driving characteristics, high efficiency and excellent positional accuracy and repeatability.
Type SD ball screws offer limited axial play, while type BD units use oversize stainless steel balls to eliminate the effects of backlash. The ball screws are corrosion resistant, and all sizes can be supplied with optional wipers.
For applications involving heavier loads, SKF's SX and BX universal ball screws are available with static load ratings from 24.4kN-243.5kN, and nominal diameters from 20-63mm. The 20mm diameter units have a lead of 5mm, while the remaining sizes can be supplied with either 5 or 10mm lead.
As standard, SX universal screws with axial play and BX backlash-free universal screws are fitted with composite inserts. They are, however, also available to special order with steel inserts that can act as a safety device for particularly demanding applications, or where the ball screw is installed vertically.
To simplify assembly, SX and BX ball screws have slim cylindrical bodies. They feature a convenient lubrication hole that can be used for a grease nipple, or as a coupling point for SKF's System 24 automatic lubrication system. For maximum corrosion resistance, the ball screw shaft can be phosphated on request, and wipers are available as an option.
