Specialty Fasteners & Components (SFC) is now supplying Solid Keenserts. Manufactured by Alcoa Fastening Systems. Solid Keenserts are, like conventional Keenserts, installed in a threaded hole to provide stronger threads in soft materials or to repair damaged threads. Both types of Keensert are secured in position by driving in the preinstalled Kees (keys) that lock the insert to the parent material (Keenserts can also be removed later if required).
However, as their name suggests, Solid Keenserts are machined from solid, rather than being manufactured from helically wound, profiled wire, so they can be drilled and tapped to accept any thread up to the maximum permissible. All Solid Keenserts are manufactured from stainless steel to EN 10088 1.4305 (Austenitic AISA grade 303).
Solid Keenserts are available from SFC in a choice of seven external thread sizes of M8 to M20 and the maximum permissible major diameter of the internal thread is 5.00 to 16.00mm. As well as accepting concentric threads, the Solid Keenserts can also be used to correct misplaced holes, as the internal thread can be drilled and tapped off-centre. Furthermore, users are not restricted to tapping metric threads; the internal thread may be BSF, BSW, BA, NPT or other thread forms.
As well as individual Solid Keenserts, SFC also supplies Solid Keensert Kits that comprise 10 threaded inserts, a drill and a tap, all stored in a robust carrying case.
