Standard and customised heavy-duty shaft seals from SKF

SKF is extending its range of reinforced shaft seals for heavy industrial applications. As well as providing a wide range of standard catalogue products, SKF offers tailored versions, in terms of both size and engineering properties.

Darron Henn, Seals Manager at SKF says: "SKF's extensive range of products, which is not limited to listed catalogue part numbers, ensures that customers in heavy-duty industries find the exact seal they need for their application."

Seals can be delivered at short notice to match exact needs. They can be installed quickly and easily, to reduce the risk of machine failure and downtime and boost rotating equipment performance.

Catalogue range

SKF's Heavy Industrial Seals (HIS) are available in a range of standard sizes (from 25 to 2,500mm), as well as in customised dimensions, and in versions with enhanced engineering properties that exceed the properties of standard seals.

The shaft seals are applicable to a range of demanding applications - including steel and aluminium rolls, pulp and paper feeders, mining and cement machinery, wind turbines and heavy-duty gearboxes - where they are exposed to high speeds, abrasive contaminants and extremes of temperature.

The catalogue seals - available in nitrile rubber (NBR), hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR) and fluoro rubber (FKM) - are moulded to size in mid to high volumes and are easily retrofittable. SKF also offers metal-reinforced versions.

SKF offers extensive advice - in terms of dimensions, types of reinforcement and design configuration - to ensure that customers specify the correct seal for their application.

Specialist range

The seals are also available in customised dimensions and in batches as small as a single product. These specialist seals are manufactured using flexible sizing processes, and are available for express delivery.

Here, catalogue sizes are obsolete, and customers configure the seals to their exact needs from three design options: all-rubber seals (solid and split); metal-cased rubber; and spring-activated sealing lips.

All-rubber seals are available in solid and split executions, where the split seal option allows seal replacement without shaft removal or dismounting; metal-cased rubber seals are self-retaining, in open housing bores, without the use of a cover plate; and, the HS, HSS and HDS ranges have a heavy-duty spring activated lip design, and are equipped with stainless steel garter springs.

Seals can also be engineered to meet the specific demands of customers: applications as diverse as cement grinding and tunnel boring, for instance, require radical variations in parameters such as the seal's application speed, counterface finish and roughness, and housing design and dimensions.

These bespoke design options ensure that the seal matches the exact needs of the application and will have an extended lifetime despite having to withstand punishing operating conditions.
