Start up every drive decentrally with the Emparro67 power supply

Drive applications face many challenges, ranging from being far away from the power supply, to high start-up currents due to powering large loads. That's where Murrelektronik's Emparro67 comes in. This next generation power supply leads the trend towards decentralisation. But it's the power boost and current limiter that make it well suited for supplying DC drives.

Recently, Murrelektronik helped design a power supply system for a DC drive in a machine feeding system. The system was large and had only one main control cabinet and no terminal boxes. The customer wanted a decentralized IP67 installation concept. He recently had to replace the existing decentralised IP67 power supply from another company when it didn't work because of the high start-up current of the DC drive.

The customer decided to use the Emparro67 power supply. Because it is has a protection degree of IP67, he could place it right next to the drive. The connectors are located on the same side, so he was able to tuck the power supply directly under the machine. This decentralised concept makes installation easier and prevents power loss by eliminating long cables.

Another critical factor for this application with DC drives was having a power supply which is powerful, especially during the start-up sequences. Emparro67 meets this requirement and also features both a power boost and current limiter. The power boost provides 150 per cent output power for more than 5 seconds. This helps get the drives started when they require more power due to start-up torque. After the power boost, 9A of constant current is delivered.

Decentralising the power supply in an application has many advantages:

  • Reduces the size of the control cabinet
  • Decreases cable loss because the power supply is directly next to the load
  • Cuts down on wiring
  • Rugged device that withstands shocks & vibrations

Emparro67 fits into Murrelektronik's product portfolio and vision for the future. Manuel Senk, Emparro67 product manager says: "Along with our remote IO concept, Emparro67 gives us the possibility to reduce the size of the cabinet and move the power supply out into the field where it should be. Our vision to help our customers achieve a zero cabinet strategy and this product is among the first that will help our customer's reach that goal."
