Staubli launches high-performance mini-SCARA robot

Staubli is well known for its TX/RX ranges of high-speed, high-precision six-axis robots, as well as the SCARA four-axis robots. Now a new, high-performance, mini-SCARA robot is being added to the growing model range.

Space is often at a premium when automation systems are being designed and integrated. The new RS20 provides all the benefits of a Staubli SCARA robot but in ultra-compact form, suitable for use on tabletop or benchtop automation. With a footprint of just 250 x 150mm, weighing just 15kg and with a reach of 220mm and a payload of 1kg, the RS20 is useful for automation tasks such as dispensing, testing, packaging and assembly. It is even small enough to be incorporated inside a machining centre, and it runs on a 230V single-phase supply.

The RS20 uses the same control platform and programming language as other Staubli robots. The CS8C M controller is a compact lightweight design based on Staubli's CS8 platform. The CS8 control platform is claimed to be the industry's most technologically advanced PC-based control system, which is well suited to applications requiring complex process control. The CS8 uses VAL3 programming language, which is adapted to robotics and includes many communication options - including Fieldbus, Ethernet, offline programming and ModBus - for ease of integration and use.

Reliability and repeatability

It is not just the robot's compactness that is remarkable, but also the fact that all cables run internally inside the arm, including the electrical/pneumatic user lines, thereby helping to ensure the highest availability and protection against failures.

Staubli robots are known for unrivalled speed and precision; this mini-SCARA has a repeatability of +/-0.01mm.

The new Ultra-Compact Mini-SCARA RS20 expands the comprehensive Staubli SCARA robot range, which now includes the RS20, RS40B, RS60 and RS80 models with reaches from 220mm to 800mm and payloads from 1-8kg. Backed by Staubli worldwide service support, the RS20 provides automation engineers with a new tool when designing those small-scale precision assembly, packaging and testing tasks.
