Sulzer appoints new General Manager for repair facility

Mike Stanley has been appointed as the new General Manager for Sulzer's Birmingham Service Centre, one of the company's key global repair centres. The facility specialises in the repair of automation equipment and rotating machines, ranging from small servo and AC/DC motors through to huge multi-megawatt generators.

Sulzer is both one of the world's largest pump manufacturers, and also one of the few global turnkey engineering and repair businesses capable of servicing and repairing a complete power generation set. This extends to gas or steam-driven turbines and their associated electrical generators. Hydro-electric power plants are also a speciality, as are any large motors and generators located on land or at sea.

The Birmingham Service Centre houses several highly specialised functions in order to support this activity; they include a copper mill, coil manufacturing, metal spraying, a large balance pit and a machining centre. All are essential in-house elements for a fast turnaround service on large rotating machines, often running into hundreds of megawatts. The site also houses a range of local and nationally delivered machining, motor rewind and electrical / electronic repair services.

Mike Stanley comments: "Sulzer is a global brand with a powerful quality association; however, I believe that our ability to deliver technically complex turnkey repair services on very short lead times means that there is a substantial opportunity for growth within the power generation, shipping and industrial sectors.

"The Birmingham Service Centre plays a key role in supporting what is a 24-hour, truly global operation with great teams working both here and abroad. Our range of customers spans global multinationals - that rely on us to keep power stations in operation, through to local companies that bring their automation components to us for repair and service.

"The common threads that run through everything we do are quality and speed of turnaround. If a customer needs something repaired to keep their operation running it is irrelevant to them whether it is an air conditioning unit, a car plant or a power station. Quality, delivered at speed is a key advantage in today's fast moving market and our extremely fast turnaround times mean that operators, particularly of large installations, can be up and running again far faster than many of them realise.

"From power thrusters on luxury cruise ships to repairing geothermal plants in the Philippine jungle, to refurbishing the iconic hydro-electric generators on the Roosevelt dam, Sulzer has delivered repairs that match or in many instances even exceed the quality and performance of the OEM product. The difference is that we have delivered within a time frame of weeks, when alternatives were being quoted in months."

Mike Stanley has an enviable track record and extensive experience in the power generation and repair markets having moved to Sulzer from a position as General Manager of a large German-owned OEM operation providing worldwide after-sales services for diesel and turbo generator products.
