Sweet success for sensors in confectionery manufacture

The primary and secondary packaging of confectionery and baked goods can be challenging, but Leuze says that its new DRT 25C dynamic reference diffuse sensor can help with the process.

The sensor works with three light spots and uses reference technology: as a first step, the surface characteristics of the belt are "˜taught-in' to enable the sensor to subsequently detect all objects that do not correspond to the belt surface. It will "˜see' these as deviations, even if the conveyor belt is dirty or vibrating. With this approach, the surface properties of the products being packaged or processed, (such as the colour, gloss, or transparency) do not influence the detection. Leuze says that its DRT 25C can detect small, flat, tall and spherical products and that even irregular shapes and contours (or products with holes) are detected thanks to a wide scanning range.

The new sensor features automatic teaching by means of the teach button, and additional functions can be conveniently integrated into the machine control via IO-Link. For example a warning message for excessive debris, use of the counter built into the sensor, or for locking the teach button.
