Torque tool calibration system also monitors assembly

Norbar is launching what it claims to be the "ultimate torque measurement, calibration and data archiving system." Known as the T-Box, the hardware is supplied complete with Torque Data Management System software that enables data to be archived, processed or analysed, plus calibration certificates can be printed.

Torque tool calibration system also monitors assembly

Thanks to an embedded PC, the handheld and benchtop torque measuring instrument boasts a user-friendly, colour touchscreen interface and can be used with all torque tools. It enables 'click,' dial and electronic torque wrenches, stall tools, pulse tools, hydraulic torque wrenches and clutch tools to be calibrated by a simple touch of the screen. The specially developed Pulse Tool Mode uses a mathematical algorithm to determine accurately the output torque of impulse tools.

Note that the T-Box is also suitable for use on automated or manual assembly stations where data can be collected during fastening operations for use in, for example, statistical process control or critical applications where comprehensive traceability is required.

The graphical display of joint profiles enables torque tool performance and joint characteristics to be analysed in detail. Up to four 'smart' transducers can be connected simultaneously. Most transducers with a mV/V output can be programmed into the T-Box memory, thereby simplifying and streamlining the use of non-smart transducers and enabling the instrument to be used beyond torque applications; for example, load and pressure transducers can be connected. The T-Box has two USB ports, one RS232 serial port and an ancillary connection. Supplied as a comprehensive kit, including cables, the T-Box can be up and running very quickly.

Step-through calibration

Users of Norbar tools will find the pre-loaded 'tool templates' simplify the calibration of individual tools. Non-Norbar torque tool users, however, still benefit through a simple tool template creator. With the ISO calibration mode selected, the T-Box guides users through every step of a calibration to ISO 6789 Assembly tools for screws and nuts - Hand torque tools - Requirements and test methods for design conformance testing, quality conformance testing and recalibration procedure. This facility is claimed to be unique.

The Torque Data Management System (TDMS) PC software uses the output of the T-Box's large memory for archiving test, calibration and graphical results. It also enables the calibration certificates and air pressure graphs to be created for pneumatic tools. TDMS can also be configured to prompt for the return of tools at their allotted recalibration period. Should the software ever need to be updated, this can be done via the unit's USB port.

Norbar says that the T-Box enables users of torque tools to move beyond the simple measurement and collection of data, providing a means by which profitable use can be made of the data. Compared with previous products from Norbar, the T-Box is said to provide considerably more functionality but without compromising the ease of use for which the company has become well known.
