White paper on the ErP Directive: optimising energy efficiency

Eaton is offering its customers a white paper, Successful Implementation of the ErP Directive, illustrating the challenges involved in all aspects of energy efficiency and describing potential savings. In Europe the issue of energy efficiency is currently a major concern for the manufacturing companies. With the introduction of ErP Directive 2009/125/EC by the European Union, these companies are faced with further reducing their energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

White paper on the ErP Directive: optimising energy efficiency

Electrical drive systems account for over two-thirds of the electrical power consumed in industrial manufacturing. Considerable energy savings are therefore still possible in electrical drive engineering in particular. This can be effectively leveraged through the intelligent use of automation in conjunction with motor starters or variable-speed drives (VSD). The key factor here is finding the right product for the application at hand. It is easy to think that a VSD should always be specified, but using a VSD for the wrong application could be a costly mistake, as a soft starter might be more cost-effective. Making the right choice requires the entire application to be considered, but just the motor and VSD or starter.

In his 12-page white paper entitled, Dipl-Ing Heribert Joachim, Senior Project Manager Drives at Eaton, illustrates these potential savings in electrical drive engineering. The author explains and illustrates the recent issues, showing savings potentials in concrete examples and presenting different technical options. The publication also provides practical help for deciding the most suitable optimisation approach for a given application.
