Maxon Motor is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2011. Having manufactured motors for applications ranging from electric shavers to equipment for use on the surface of Mars, today the company is known as one of the world's leading suppliers of high-precision motors, drives and systems for design engineers.
The Swiss company began life as Interelectric Sachseln AG in 1961, producing DC motors and the shaving foils for Braun Electric Razors. From these relatively humble origins, the business made a defining switch in 1968 to developing tiny DC motors with ironless rotors, thereby doubling efficiency compared to traditional models and revolutionising the market for miniature motors.
Since then, the company has consistently been at the forefront of innovation, pushing boundaries in terms of size, reliability and performance of all its components.
50 years on, Maxon motors can be found in almost all cutting-edge applications, from high-temperature subsea drilling to two generations of NASA Mars Rovers.
