Implementing Industry 4.0 using Profinet and OPC UA

In close co-operation, and within the framework of a joint working group, experts from Profibus & Profinet International (PI) and the OPC Foundation have specified a solution for presenting Profinet data in the OPC UA object model. Profinet's OPC UA companion specification is set to be reviewed soon. The solution's user-friendliness has already been tested in terms of its practical implementation, using the example of a multi-vendor demonstrator; at the PI booth at SPS IPC Drives 2018, multiple applications were shown in interaction with Profinet and OPC UA.

Renishaw improves access to efficient metal 3D printed parts

Renishaw is working with autonomous topology optimisation expert ParaMatters to give manufacturers access to efficiently manufactured metal 3D printed parts. ParaMatters' easy-to-use CogniCAD cloud offering enables users to upload part geometries for optimisation; CogniCAD automatically produces lightweight macro, meso and lattice structures using generative design principles, backed up with high-resolution finite element analysis (FEA) validation. CogniCAD users are no longer constrained by traditional complex CAD/CAE/CAM tools because all they need to do is upload their part and follow the intuitive CogniCAD workflow and simple interface to prepare a 3D printable model.

See specialist adhesive tapes at Southern Manufacturing

Early in 2018 the application engineers at Milton Keynes-based Lohmann Tapes were presented with an interesting challenge: could they bond a magnet onto a steel shaft? "Yes they could", came the answer. But could they permanently bond a magnet onto a steel shaft that spent all its time immersed in a hot oil bath at temperatures of up to 140degC, inside an oil pump? "We will se", said the application engineers. And after extensive testing at Lohmann's R&D facility, they saw that they could. Further testing by the OEM confirmed that the tape exceeded the design specification by a considerable margin and as a result you will now find Lohmann's DuploTEC 10410 tape holding magnets to shafts inside thousands of these oil pumps across Europe.

Industrial robot market continues to grow

While fears of recession, trade frictions and Brexit seem to be slowing down the economy in Europe, for the industrial robot market the overall picture stays bright. In some parts of Europe a strong growth trend is continuing. Shinichi Tanzawa, President & CEO of the FANUC Europe Corporation says: "In the first half of our current fiscal year our order volume in all Europe rose by a double digit percentage number and we expect the expansion to continue although it might slow down a bit."

Mouser stocking MonoDAQ data acquisition devices
