Pneumatics more reliable than electrics for valve actuation

Thames Water has switched from electrical to pneumatic actuation on a 1600mm butterfly valve that is crucial to the operation of its Ashford Common water treatment plant. As well as improving reliability, the pneumatic actuation makes the valve more responsive and it oscillates less.
